The centre provides a resource for disabled children and young people and their families in Gateshead and we aim to promote a positive image of disability throughout Gateshead. We have a number of services including crèche, water play and baby social sessions, a youth forum, parents groups including a monthly Asperger’s support group, a family support service and access and inclusion workers. Our services are supported by a number of volunteers who work with our volunteer co-ordinator. Contact a Family is a national organisation offering information and support to families who care for disabled children. The North East office is based in Newcastle and covers Tyne & Wear, Northumberland, County Durham, Darlington, Hartlepool, Teesside and Redcar and Cleveland.
We have details of services and support around the region and information on a wide range of topics including specific condition information. We run workshops for parents and professionals, support local parent groups, raise parent’s voices on local consultation issues and produce a range of publications including free regional newsletters. We also have a Family Support Worker in the Teesside area of the region and Local Volunteer Representatives who are all parents of disabled children themselves.

Disability North is a regional charity, in Newcastle upon Tyne. Their aim is to promote inclusion, independence and choice for disabled people by providing a range of services. These include information and advice on benefits, assistive equipment and adaptations, accessible environments, disability awareness training, independent living, direct payments and support for carers and parents.
The charity also holds a number of fundraising events annually, the biggest of which is DNEX, an exhibition of products and services for disabled people, which this year is on 18th - 19th October at Newcastle Metro Arena.

The Network is an information service for children with disabilities and their families. It is a way of staying in touch with families and learning more about their needs so that we can plan services for the future.
The Network is for all children and young people with disabilities or additional needs who live in Gateshead and are aged between 0-19 years. We use the term “disability” to include learning disabilities; physical disabilities; sensory impairment; communication difficulties; mental health problems; behavioural or emotional problems; and long-term illness. You do not have to be receiving services or benefits related to a disability to join the Network.

South Tyneside Active Network is a service provided by the Local Authority for disabled children and their families living in the borough. To be eligible to register with this service, the child must be aged between 0 – 18 years, live in the borough of South Tyneside and have a lifelong disability. Physical and learning disabilities, Autism and ADHD all constitute lifelong conditions, though we cannot accept applications from families where a child suffers solely from Asthma, Diabetes, or other controllable illnesses.
Once registered the child’s details are held on a secure database, this data is used for research purposes and families regularly receive questionnaires to complete, to enable the Local Authority and Health Authorities to plan future services and gain feedback on current ones.
